Kepler is a table lamp with a structure designed to allow the user to adjust the area of light.

Development
The idea behind Kepler is to create a table lamp with an adjustable area of light, which allows a change from diffused to focused light for different scenarios. Inspired from space satellites, I aimed for a modern, technological and futuristic aesthetic.
Development
The interaction of adjusting the area of light was settled very early to be the pull/push action.
In early versions, it was possible to detach the light as a torch, and there was a shell for the panels, but both were removed due to excessive structure.
The soft support allows for better flexibility and a balance to the sharp and geometric shape of the head of the lamp.
Intuitive interaction
Two functions are integrated into one intuitive action: pulling the end of the lamp.
The light turns on when the slider leaves the lock/off position; then the area of light can be adjusted by continuing to pull the slider to change the angle of the wing panels. This allows Kepler to be used either as a focused light source or as a diffused area light, depending on the user’s needs.
Structure engineering
The most challenging part of the engineering for this project is keeping the structural complexity and the number of parts to a minimum for function, manufacturing, and assembly.
Since most of the structure is exposed, a great deal of work has also gone into making the components aesthetically balanced and pleasing, without feeling chunky or visually heavy on one side.
Scenarios
Kepler’s adjustable light area can be useful in many scenarios. With a quick adjustment, it can switch from a tight, focused beam to a broad, diffused glow that brightens the whole workspace without harsh shadows. For example, when reviewing documents late at night, one can narrow the light to stay fully immersed while keeping the rest of the room calm and dim; later, widen the beam to comfortably illuminate the entire desk for organizing books or tidying up.
